PLEASE NOTE - The Hiawatha Trail is indeed OPEN starting May 27th of Memorial Day weekend & 7 days a week thru Sept. 18th. Travel down I-90 to the parking area in Taft, MT has no issues.
BUT Shoshone County just advised us that Moon Pass from Wallace to the Loop Creek Drainage (Just short of Pearson, ID) will be CLOSED this weekend due to weather.
Access from Avery, ID to Pearson, ID (the bottom of the Hiawatha Trail) is OPEN even though you will see a sign in Avery that says road closed ahead. The sign is to warn guests that they can`t ride all the way over to Wallace, ID. Guests wanting to ride the Hiawatha Trail and park at the bottom (Pearson) will be able to get to the Pearson Trailhead from Avery, ID.
Again no issues traveling down I-90 to Taft, MT (exit 5) and up the 506 to the East Portal parking area.
East Portal is the natural start and primary parking lot for the Hiawatha Scenic Bike Trail.
We hope to see you this weekend. Enjoy incredible scenic views with snow on the surrounding mountain tops. Also know that the trail will be wet as is the case every spring. TIPS: Bring a towel or two for drying off and to put on your car seats. Bring a change of clothes. Dress for the weather. Bring a thermos with hot chocolate. Know that the long St. Paul Pass tunnel is cold ~ 47 degrees year round. Ride Early to enjoy more wildlife. NOTE: Fewer people ride the trail especially in the early season Opening thru the start of school break and late season after kids are back in school - COME PREPARED AND ENJOY!
